A reward percentage is only half the calculation

The denominator can matter more than the headline. A simple worked example shows why a reward rate needs its calculation base beside it.

A percentage is easy to remember. Its calculation base is easier to miss. That is why an offer assessment should put the rate and the denominator together before discussing how attractive the reward looks.

Put the base beside the rate

Stake’s published explanation describes casino rakeback as 3.5% of the house edge. It is a statement about the base used to calculate a reward, rather than a promise to return 3.5% of everything wagered. The same page sets out VIP eligibility; the calculation alone does not establish that every account receives it.

A worked illustration

Take a hypothetical $100 wager and a hypothetical 1% house edge. The edge component is $1. Applying 3.5% to that component gives $0.035, or 3.5 cents.

Applying 3.5% directly to the $100 would give $3.50. The two results differ by a factor of 100 because the calculation bases differ. The example uses chosen numbers to show the arithmetic. It is not a statement of the edge for a particular game or a prediction of what a player will win or lose.

Ask what reaches the account

A useful assessment also records whether a reward is cash or bonus credit, when it becomes available and what restrictions apply to it. A calculation can be correct while a headline leaves those practical conditions unexplained.

Our deal reports put the source and material terms beside the offer. A future review should also record what the tested account actually received and the date of that observation.

Keep the comparison consistent

Comparing two reward rates without their bases is like comparing two wallet charts without their coverage. Before deciding that one number is larger, establish that the numbers describe the same thing.

The editorial question for the week is simple: can a reader reconstruct the calculation from the information shown? If the base, eligibility or payment rules are missing, the percentage is the beginning of the research.
